Wellness Matters: Women’s Wellness Gathering June 2025

As part of the Wellness Matters Program for Arab Seniors in Canada, the Iraqi Canadian Society – Mississauga hosted a meaningful women’s wellness event on June 30, 2025. Held at our Inanna venue, the gathering brought together women from across the Arab senior community for an afternoon of conversation, connection, and care.

The event offered a warm, welcoming space for participants to share stories, enjoy refreshments, and reflect on themes of health and well-being. It served as a reminder of the power of community in supporting emotional wellness and social connection.

We thank all who attended, and we remain committed to providing culturally thoughtful programs that uplift and empower our senior community members.

Iraqi Canadian Society Father’s Day Celebration 2025

The Iraqi Canadian Society hosted a lively Father’s Day event at Inanna venue filled with music by Saif Shaheen, games, food, and heartfelt recognition for fathers and volunteers who contributed to this year’s Carassauga Festival of Cultures. 

The gathering brought the community together in a joyful atmosphere, offering a refreshing break from the challenges of current times. A wonderful display of culture, connection, and celebration despite the summer heat.

The Iraqi Canadian Society was honored to once again represent Iraq at Carassauga Festival 2025, one of Canada’s largest and most beloved multicultural events. This annual celebration brings together diverse communities from across the region, offering a unique platform to share culture, traditions, and stories with thousands of visitors.

At the Iraqi Pavilion, we welcomed guests with open arms and hearts, creating an immersive experience filled with authentic Iraqi music, vibrant dancing, and mouthwatering traditional dishes. The festival was a joyful gathering where people of all ages connected, reminisced, and celebrated our shared heritage.

Visitors to our pavilion expressed their admiration for the rich history and cultural pride on display. From the engaging live performances to the rich aromas of Iraqi cuisine, every detail reflected the beauty and diversity of our community. It was inspiring to see the genuine curiosity and enthusiasm that our culture continues to inspire.

We extend our deepest gratitude to the countless volunteers, performers, organizers, and community members whose tireless dedication made this event possible. Their passion and commitment are the foundation of our society’s success and outreach.

Carassauga is more than a festival — it is a powerful reminder of the strength and unity that comes from celebrating our differences while honoring our roots. It offers a platform for cultural exchange that enriches not only the Iraqi community but the broader Canadian mosaic as well.

Arab Heritage Month: "Um Kalthoum" Tribute Concert

On April 26, 2025, the Mississauga branch of the Iraqi Canadian Society proudly took part in a special Arab Heritage Month celebration in collaboration with Music Without Borders – Musique Sans Frontières. The evening featured a breathtaking concert titled “Um Kalthoum”, held at the Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts. 

This unforgettable night paid tribute to one of the Arab world’s most iconic voices, honoring her legacy through powerful performances that celebrated music, culture, and shared identity. It was an inspiring event that brought the community together in pride and appreciation for Arab heritage. 

We extend our sincere thanks to Music Without Borders for organizing such a meaningful evening and for allowing us to be a part of it.

Wellness Matters: Supporting Arab Seniors

The Iraqi Canadian Society is proud to lead the Wellness Matters Program for Arab Seniors at Inanna venue, a meaningful initiative aimed at improving the physical and mental well-being of Arab seniors in Ontario. 

Through workshops, social activities, and health-focused programming, this project offers a space for connection, support, and empowerment. We are honored to serve our senior community members and help ensure they feel seen, valued, and cared for. 

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all participants for their engagement and to the Ontario Government for its generous support in making this program a reality.

A Celebration of Art and Hope with Saad Al-Ta’i

In December 2024, the Iraqi Canadian Society – Mississauga proudly hosted a special exhibition featuring the renowned Iraqi artist Saad Al-Ta’i at Inanna venue. The event showcased more than twenty original pieces themed around “Hope,” created during his time in Canada.

Alongside these powerful works, the exhibition included a series of watercolor paintings capturing the natural beauty of the Canadian landscape. This inspiring event brought together community members of all ages to reflect on creativity, resilience, and the enduring power of cultural expression.

In November 2024, the Iraqi Canadian Society proudly hosted a community Bazaar at our welcoming Inanna venue located at 3173 Erindale Station Road. The event featured a diverse array of vendors offering perfumes, antiques, toys, books, jewelry, delicious food, and much more. 

We were honored to receive a surprise visit and continued support from Councillor Stephen Dasko, whose encouragement means a lot to our community. 

The Bazaar was a celebration of community spirit and local entrepreneurship — with many women-led businesses and small ventures proudly showcasing their talents. It provided a valuable platform for connection, creativity, and cultural pride.

Leadership Highlight: Heritage Award

Mrs. Eman Baktash, President of the Iraqi Canadian Society, was awarded the Credite’s Community Heritage Award in recognition of her outstanding contributions to preserving and promoting cultural heritage in Mississauga. 

This meaningful acknowledgment reflects years of dedication to uplifting the Iraqi and broader Arab community through service, tradition, and connection.

Middle Eastern Arts Festival – Mississauga 2024

The Iraqi Canadian Society was proud to participate in the 2024 Middle Eastern Arts Festival held in the heart of Mississauga. Through our cultural booth, we showcased elements of Iraqi heritage, art, and tradition to a diverse audience, helping to foster greater understanding and appreciation for our community’s roots. 

From vibrant displays to meaningful conversations, the event offered an opportunity for us to connect with fellow cultural organizations, engage with the public, and celebrate the richness of Middle Eastern identity in Canada. We thank the festival organizers for including us in this celebration of unity through art and culture.

Honoring a Master of Iraqi Art: Visit from Saad Al-Ta’i

The Mississauga branch of the Iraqi Canadian Society was deeply honored to welcome renowned Iraqi artist Mr. Saad Al-Ta’i to our Inanna venue and headquarters, accompanied by his daughter, artist Zeina Al-Ta’i. During his visit, Mr. Al-Ta’i generously gifted us a signed copy of a book chronicling his extraordinary life and artistic journey. 

Born in 1935 in Hilla, Iraq, Mr. Al-Ta’i is one of Iraq’s most celebrated visual artists. His remarkable career spans decades of exhibitions, teaching, and international recognition — including the prestigious Knight Medal from the Republic of Italy. A former professor and department head at the College of Fine Arts in Baghdad, his influence shaped generations of Iraqi artists and helped preserve Iraq’s modern art legacy. 

This visit was not only a moment of great pride for our community but also a celebration of cultural excellence and artistic heritage. We are grateful for his presence and the inspiration he continues to provide.

Carassauga 2024 Appreciation Dinner

A delegation from the Iraqi Canadian Society attended the 2024 Carassauga Festival of Cultures Appreciation Dinner, hosted by the festival organizers to honor and thank all participants for their contributions. 

It was a wonderful event that recognized the collective efforts, hard work, and dedication that made this vibrant multicultural celebration such a success. 

We are proud to have once again represented Iraq at Carassauga and are deeply grateful for the festival’s continued support, acknowledgment, and spirit of unity.

Visit from MPP Natalia Kusendova to the Iraqi Canadian Society

The Iraqi Canadian Society was honored to welcome MPP Natalia Kusendova, a Member of Provincial Parliament and Minister in the Ontario Government, during her visit to our new headquarters in Mississauga. 

She was welcomed by Mrs. Eman Baktash, President of the Iraqi Canadian Society, and Mr. Riyadh Al-Imam, Vice President. During the meeting, discussions focused on the Society’s ongoing programs—particularly those supporting seniors—delivered in collaboration with the Jaaweed Foundation. 

Ms. Kusendova expressed her happiness to visit the new center and congratulated the Society on the opening of its welcoming new space, which will serve as a vibrant hub for future community programs. She affirmed her full support for the Society’s developmental and social initiatives and highlighted the Ontario Government’s willingness to provide funding grants to help bring these programs to life.

Eid al-Fitr Celebration at ICS Mississauga

The Iraqi Canadian Society hosted a lively family celebration in honor of Eid al-Fitr, bringing together community members in a festive evening of music and connection. Held at our Inanna venue, the event featured performances by talented artists Tara Monica and Evan, whose music filled the space with energy and warmth.

With a vibrant turnout from both the Iraqi and Palestinian communities, the celebration reflected the spirit of unity and shared joy that defines Eid. Laughter, music, and community filled the air, reminding us of the importance of coming together to honor traditions and build lasting connections.

Book Signing by Wael Al-Murayeb

The Iraqi Canadian Society was proud to host a special cultural event celebrating the launch of the latest novel by esteemed Iraqi artist and author Wael Al-Murayeb, published by the Iraqi Writers Union. Held at our Inanna venue in Mississauga, the book signing welcomed community members, literature lovers, and supporters of Iraqi art and culture. 

Guests had the opportunity to meet the author, learn about his creative journey, and engage in a lively afternoon celebrating literature, identity, and expression. Events like this are part of our mission to uplift and honor Iraqi creativity in Canada. We are deeply grateful to all who joined us to support this inspiring occasion.

Civic Engagement Town Hall with Councillor Stephen Dasko

The Iraqi Canadian Society held a meaningful town hall meeting at our Inanna venue and Mississauga headquarters with special guest Councillor Stephen Dasko. What made this meeting exceptional was the active presence of youth from our community, who brought thoughtful questions and engaged in insightful discussions about local issues. 

The dialogue covered a variety of topics affecting the city of Mississauga, particularly the importance of youth participation in local elections and civic life. Events like this reflect our ongoing commitment to empowering the next generation to be informed, involved, and impactful. 

We thank Councillor Dasko for his time and continuous support, and we look forward to building more spaces for civic education and community dialogue.

Volunteer Appreciation: A Generational Bond

The Iraqi Canadian Society hosted a heartfelt gathering for the volunteers of the Iraqi Pavilion at Carassauga at Inanna venue

Spanning three generations, the group came together to celebrate their shared pride in Iraqi heritage and their contributions to one of Mississauga’s largest multicultural festivals.

Community Tax Filing Support for Seniors and Low-Income Residents

The Iraqi Canadian Society, in collaboration with MMS Accounting and Bookkeeping and the Jawed Foundation for Seniors, offered low-cost tax filing services to seniors and low-income individuals. More than 20 community members benefited from this initiative and expressed their heartfelt appreciation for the support. 

A special thanks goes to accountant Mr. Sadiq Al-Azzawi, who generously donated all his service fees back to the Iraqi Canadian Society. 

We extend our sincere gratitude to MMS Accounting and the Jawed Foundation for their partnership in making this valuable initiative a success.

International Women’s Day Celebration

In March 2024, the Iraqi Canadian Society proudly hosted a warm and joyful celebration at our Inanna venue and Mississauga headquarters in honor of International Women’s Day. The event brought together women from across the community to celebrate their achievements, share stories, and enjoy a festive atmosphere filled with appreciation and solidarity. 

With an inspiring turnout and heartfelt conversations, the gathering highlighted the strength, resilience, and beauty of women in our community. It was a vibrant reminder of our ongoing commitment to support and uplift women of all generations.

Community Dialogue with Councillor Dipika Damerla

The Iraqi Canadian Society welcomed Councillor Dipika Damerla, representative of Ward 7 in the City of Mississauga, to our headquarters for an important community dialogue. The meeting brought together community leaders and professionals to discuss key  issues affecting the Iraqi and broader Arab community, including municipal services, senior support programs, and the importance of civic participation.

Councillor Damerla praised Mississauga’s rich cultural diversity and highlighted the city’s upcoming 50th anniversary celebrations. She also encouraged active participation in the upcoming municipal by-election and emphasized the importance of representation in shaping the future of our city.

Discussions focused on improving services for seniors, better support newcomers, and preserving cultural heritage through language and arts programs. Councillor Damerla expressed her full support for the Society’s ongoing efforts and pledged to assist in implementing impactful programs that serve the community.

We are grateful for her visit and look forward to future collaboration.

Strengthening Community Ties: Meeting with Councillor Stephen Dasko

On January 4, 2024, the Iraqi Canadian Society hosted Councillor Stephen Dasko at our Mississauga office as part of our ongoing efforts to support and empower the Iraqi community. The meeting, led by Society President Eman Baktash, focused on key topics including municipal services, integration support for newcomers, and the fight against racism. 

The discussion emphasized the significance of preserving Iraqi identity through Arabic language education, cultural programming, and increased support for Iraqi-Canadian artists. Councillor Dasko expressed his full support for the Society’s initiatives and praised the role of cultural diversity in shaping Mississauga. 

We were also joined by immigration consultant Maryam Boutros, newcomer advisor Amal Ali, and curriculum coordinator Nadia Al-Jader, all of whom contributed to a productive and collaborative conversation about the needs of our growing community.

Official Opening of the Iraqi Canadian Society Headquarters in Mississauga

On December 17, 2023, the Iraqi Canadian Society proudly inaugurated its new headquarters in Mississauga, as well as the unveiling of our new Inanna venue, marking a landmark moment for the community. The event gathered prominent community leaders, elected officials, and members of the Iraqi and Arab communities in a warm and celebratory atmosphere. 

Eman Baktash, President of the Society, welcomed guests and reflected on over 30 years of dedicated service to Iraqi Canadians. Councillor Alvin Tedjo, representing Mayor Bonnie Crombie, praised the Society’s longstanding commitment, stating, “Give yourself a round of applause for the amazing work that you’ve done over 30 years … congratulations.” 

The new headquarters will serve as a dynamic hub for cultural events, newcomer settlement services, art exhibitions by Iraqi-Canadian artists, and a cultural forum offering monthly educational programs. 

The opening ceremony featured inspiring speeches, traditional musical performances, and recognition of the generous support from sponsors and volunteers who helped make the event possible. 

This milestone reaffirms the Society’s dedication to preserving Iraqi heritage, fostering community connections, and supporting the well-being of Iraqi Canadians in Mississauga and the wider region.

We were especially honored by the presence of a delegation from the Assyrian Aid Society, including Mrs. Deglat Georges and Mr. Yonan Lazar, President of the Assyrian Aid Society in Iraq. They presented a special plaque in appreciation of our work promoting Iraq’s rich cultural diversity — a powerful reminder of the unity and shared heritage we celebrate through these events.

Celebrating Iraqi Canadian Literature: Book Signing Evening with Poet Janina Georgis

The Iraqi Canadian Society in Mississauga proudly hosted an inspiring book signing event featuring the acclaimed Iraqi Canadian poet Janina Georgis and her latest collection. Despite challenging weather, a dedicated audience gathered to celebrate Iraqi literary arts and engage in meaningful discussions that enriched the evening. 

This event, organized in partnership with Dari Books Publishing, underscores the Society’s commitment to promoting Iraqi culture through diverse artistic expressions. We look forward to welcoming the community to many more cultural gatherings and literary celebrations in the near future.

Strengthening Ties with the Assyrian Aid Society

As part of its ongoing commitment to collaboration, the Iraqi Canadian Society hosted a meeting on February 13, 2023, with a delegation from the Assyrian Aid Society. 

Held at our Mississauga office, the meeting focused on discussing each organization’s projects and exploring opportunities for future cooperation. Both sides expressed enthusiasm about working together to support the Iraqi community in Canada and contribute to humanitarian efforts in Iraq.

11th General Conference Elects New Leadership for the Iraqi Canadian Society

On October 29, 2022, the Iraqi Canadian Society successfully held its 11th General Conference, marked by an engaged turnout from members of the Iraqi community. 

During the event, participants voted to elect a new administrative board to lead the Society in its next chapter. Eman Baktash was re-elected as President, with Riad Al-Imam continuing as Vice President. The conference also led to the formation of several key committees, including Finance, Culture & Media, Grants, and Relations, each composed of dedicated volunteers and community leaders. 

The event highlighted the continued commitment of the Society to transparency, community engagement, and strategic planning to support the needs and aspirations of Iraqi Canadians across the country.

Iraqi Canadian Society Shines with Landmark Cultural Festival at Aga Khan Museum

In celebration of its 31st anniversary, the Iraqi Canadian Society hosted a groundbreaking cultural festival at Toronto’s prestigious Aga Khan Museum in December 2021. Despite challenges posed by the global pandemic, the Society successfully showcased the richness of Iraqi heritage through art exhibitions, literary presentations, and inspiring musical performances—including a captivating Sufi Jazz concert by renowned Iraqi artist Mustafa Alazzawi. 

The two-day event gathered attendees from across Canada and the United States, reflecting the Society’s growing prominence and international stature. It also marked a significant milestone, as the Society transitioned to a federally recognized organization, expanding its role in promoting Iraqi culture and community in Canada. 

This festival reaffirmed the Society’s commitment to fostering cultural pride, artistic excellence, and community engagement—paving the way for future successes on both national and global stages.

Iraqi Canadian Society Honored at Carassauga Festival 2022

The Iraqi Canadian Society delegation proudly participated in the 2022 Carassauga Festival of Cultures Awards Ceremony, recognizing organizations that contributed to the success of this major international event. 

The Society was honored for its outstanding role in representing Iraq, with its President, Ms. Eman Baktash, receiving special recognition for the dedication and impactful presence of the Iraqi community at the festival.

Honoring the Legacy of Iraqi Poet Muzaffar al-Nawab: A Cultural Evening Hosted by the Iraqi Canadian Society

The Iraqi Canadian Society proudly hosted a heartfelt cultural evening commemorating the legendary Iraqi poet Muzaffar al-Nawab. The event featured Dr. Saadi al-Hadithi, a longtime friend and fellow artist, who shared touching memories spanning over 60 years alongside al-Nawab. Attendees were also moved by captivating performances from renowned artist Mustafa Alazzawi, who delivered a selection of al-Nawab’s acclaimed sung poetry alongside traditional Iraqi songs. 

The evening drew a large and diverse audience of over 200 members of the Iraqi community from Toronto, Mississauga, Ottawa, London, Hamilton, and surrounding areas. At the close of the event, Dr. Saadi al-Hadithi was honored by the Iraqi Canadian Society, represented by President Eman Baktash, in recognition of his remarkable artistic contributions and enduring friendship with al-Nawab. 

This memorable gathering marked the second time the society has welcomed Dr. Hadithi to Canada, reflecting the deep cultural ties and commitment to preserving Iraqi heritage within our community. The Iraqi Canadian Society extends heartfelt thanks to all who attended and made this event a resounding success.

Empowering Iraqi Youth: Formation of a Youth Committee Marks New Chapter for the Iraqi Canadian Society in Mississauga

In a significant step toward strengthening the role of youth in community leadership, the Iraqi Canadian Society in Mississauga recently hosted a gathering of young Iraqi women volunteers who contributed to the success of the Iraqi Pavilion at the Carassauga Festival of Cultures.

During this inspiring meeting, ideas were exchanged and a foundational plan was set to form a dedicated Youth Committee. This committee will focus on addressing the needs and aspirations of Iraqi youth in the Greater Toronto Area, led by passionate young Iraqis ready to make a difference.

The Iraqi Canadian Society reaffirms its commitment to supporting the next generation, ensuring the association remains a welcoming and empowering home for all Iraqis across Canada. Together, we are building a brighter future grounded in community, culture, and shared purpose.

Iraqi Festival of Toronto 2021

In 2021, the Iraqi Canadian Society proudly participated in the Iraqi Festival of Toronto (IFT), a landmark cultural event celebrating the depth and diversity of Iraqi heritage through music, literature, and community engagement.

Among the festival’s standout moments was Letters from Iraq — a deeply moving musical performance by Grammy-nominated oud virtuoso Rahim Alhaj, accompanied by a string quintet. His compositions, rooted in memory and emotion, told stories of resilience, displacement, and the shared humanity that connects us all.

Another highlight was a powerful literary evening titled “The Things That Can’t Be Said: Trauma, Love, and Defiance in Iraqi Women’s Literature.” This event featured award-winning playwright and performer Heather Raffo in conversation with literary scholar Dr. Amir Al-Azraki, offering a rare window into the voices and experiences of Iraqi women through poetry, dialogue, and performance.

The Iraqi Canadian Society’s presence at the festival reflected our ongoing commitment to cultural preservation and storytelling. By supporting and uplifting events like IFT, we continue to foster a stronger, more connected Iraqi Canadian identity across generations and cities.

Sufi Jazz Fusion with Mustafa Alazzawi at the Iraqi Festival of Toronto

The first day of the festival concluded with a captivating Sufi Jazz concert by artist Mustafa Alazzawi. Blending Eastern spirituality with Western musical elements, the performance offered a fresh, cross-cultural take on traditional Sufi music. 

Audiences were treated to a spiritual and sonic journey that broke away from expectations, emphasizing harmony, connection, and the soulful depth of fusion music.

Book Signing with Dr. Khairallah Said

As part of the 2021 Iraqi Festival of Toronto, renowned cultural researcher Dr. Khairallah Said hosted a special book signing and discussion that explored themes central to Iraqi identity and creativity. In a thoughtful presentation, Dr. Said addressed the importance of understanding Iraqi creative expression, the impact of exile on cultural identity, and the richness of Iraqi literary traditions.

Attendees had the opportunity to engage with Dr. Said’s thought-provoking ideas and receive signed copies of his influential works, including:

Opening of the Iraqi Art Exhibition at the Aga Khan Museum

The Iraqi Canadian Society proudly inaugurated a distinguished art exhibition at Toronto’s Aga Khan Museum as part of the prestigious Iraqi Festival of Toronto. This exhibition features an exceptional collection of works by Iraqi-Canadian visual artists, celebrating the vibrant heritage and contemporary creativity of Iraq’s rich artistic traditions.

Showcasing a diverse range of styles and mediums, the exhibition offers visitors a unique opportunity to explore the depth and breadth of Iraqi art in the Canadian diaspora. Tishreen Bazaar – October 2021 in Mississauga

In 2021, the Iraqi Canadian Society hosted one of its early Tishreen Bazaars at 168 Queen Street South in Mississauga. The event brought together a vibrant mix of local artisans, small business owners, and community members for a special day of culture, creativity, and support.

Visitors explored a variety of stalls offering handmade crafts, traditional goods, art, jewelry, and delicious treats — all created or curated by passionate vendors from the community. The bazaar created a warm and festive atmosphere, encouraging everyone to shop local and celebrate the talents within the Iraqi Canadian community.
